As the weather in Ames warms up, the fuller our calendars get. Farmers’ markets, workshops and shows offer ways to soak up the sun and escape it if it gets a bit too hot.
Here are ways to spend your summer right here in Ames.
The Downtown Ames Farmers’ Market
Filled with vendors of all kinds, from fresh produce, to crafts and homemade treats, the Downtown Ames Farmers’ Market is up and running every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through October. October 4 and October 11 markets start at 9 a.m.
Reiman Gardens
Iowa State University’s Reiman Gardens boasts 17 acres of gardens and a butterfly exhibit that are open to the public and free for ISU students.
Events such as workshops, day camps and garden yoga are hosted by the gardens and can be found on its website.

Ames Summer Series
515 Days have already passed, where downtown Ames was filled with food trucks, live music and local brews — but there are two more events planned for the summer.
June 18, Campustown: From 4 to 7 p.m., Campustown will become the hub of the Ames Summer Series.
July 16, North Grand Mall: From 4 to 7 p.m., the North Grand Mall will become the hub of the Ames Summer Series.
Ames Community Theater shows
If you’re a fan of keeping it indoors during the summer, community theater productions this summer might be the ideal break from the hot temperatures.
The Story Theater Company will perform a musical version of the hit Disney trilogy Descendants from June 20 to 29. Tickets can be purchased on the company’s website.
The Ames Community Theater will perform The Prom from June 12 through June 29. Tickets can be purchased on the company’s website.
