Short school board meeting approves demolition bid

A brief school board meeting the day before Election Day ended in the approval of a bid to demolish the Administration Building and the garage at Northwestern Avenue and 13th Street.

The Ames School Board will have two familiar faces and two new faces after this year’s election. Three ran for three at-large seats — Kelly Winfrey, Art Baumgartner and Jennifer Tipton — while Aaron Rodriguez ran to fill an at-large vacancy. All were uncontested.

School board hears about pilot programs, updates and plans

The Ames Community School District will pilot a new elementary literacy program through 95 Percent Group, the board decided Monday in a 4 to 1 vote. The curriculum, 95 Phonics Core Program, includes classroom kits, student workbooks and activities.

School board begins its school year with facility updates

Monday’s school board meeting was full of announcements about facility updates to launch the fall season of play and sports. The Ames High School track has been completed and includes marks of an unwanted guest: hoof prints from a wandering deer. They were found after the track’s curing stage had been completed.

Ames School Board discusses new courses, legislative priorities

The Ames School Board discussed two new high school courses that will help students build their literacy and math skills at the last meeting before the new school year, which starts Aug. 25. The district has also identified its top priorities for the upcoming legislative session.
