School board elections: Ames elects 2 new members; Gilbert candidates tie for two positions

The Ames School Board will have two familiar faces and two new faces after this year’s election. Three ran for three at-large seats — Kelly Winfrey, Art Baumgartner and Jennifer Tipton — while Aaron Rodriguez ran to fill an at-large vacancy. All were uncontested.

Ames approves new fire station; mayor, city council, hospital trustees reelected

Ames voters approved spending $10.5 million to relocate Fire Station No. 2 from the heart of Campustown to State Avenue. There were 5,881 votes on the question in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial election results from the Iowa Secretary of State. The bond garnered 5,099 yes votes — 86.7%.

For Ames residents, it’s the one contested office on the 2025 election ballot. Ames’ hospital Board of Trustees has two incumbents and one challenger running for two seats.
Officials say fire trucks have trouble getting in and out of the station because there's no drive-through access. When trucks come back from emergency calls, they must back into the station while cars and people are walking nearby on busy Welch Avenue.

Ames Fire Chief Rich Higgins and his department are used to answering calls for help — not making them. However, the Campustown station no longer meets safety needs, so the department is asking taxpayers to help fund a new fire station on State Avenue.

The names for the Ames mayor and city council seats on this year's election ballot are familiar ones. The Ames Voice sent out a questionnaire to all candidates in the Ames City Council election to find out who they are and what they want to accomplish on the city council. All of the candidates are running unopposed.
