Ames City Council members Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen, Gloria Betcher and Amber Corrieri have announced they’ll seek reelection in November.
The incumbents’ seats are up for reelection on the six-member council. Mayor John Haila announced his reelection bid for a third term earlier this year.
Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen
Ward 1 Rep. Beatty-Hansen announced her reelection on Thursday in a statement, saying, “I have enjoyed serving Ames these past 10 years, and it would be my honor to do so for another term. Ames is in the middle of some really important projects that I would like to see through to completion, such as our transition from waste-to-energy to a new solid waste system, among others. I have been humbled and honored by the trust placed in me by the residents of Ames and would be happy to continue serving as your Ward 1 city council member.”
Beatty-Hansen, an ISU alumna, was first elected to the council in 2015 as an at-large representative and was reelected in 2019. In 2023, she was elected to the Ward 1 seat in a special election following redistricting. She is the operations and HR Manager at Wheatsfield Cooperative and co-owner of Cycles Recycles.
Gloria Betcher
Ward 3 Rep. Betcher announced her reelection on Friday. “It would be my honor to continue to serve the residents of Ames as the city moves forward with ongoing work on sustainability, creating more housing options, and helping to bring the Ames Main Street vision plan to fruition,” she said in a statement. “I hope the voters will support me so that I may continue to act as a voice for neighborhood concerns and community engagement locally and continue to share with municipal leaders across the nation the many things that make Ames a great place to live.”
Betcher said her proudest accomplishment is leading the effort to rename Ames Municipal Airport for former resident James Herman Banning, the first African American to receive a federal commercial pilot’s license and complete a transcontinental flight. She has also worked to improve civic engagement with residents, especially students.
Betcher, a teaching professor of English at Iowa State University, was first elected to the council in 2013 as to represent Ward 1 and was reelected in 2017 and 2021. In the 2023 special election following a redistricting, she was elected to represent Ward 3.
Amber Corrieri
At-large Rep. Corrieri, one of two at-large representatives, announced her reelection bid for a fourth term on Saturday.
“Over the past three terms, I have had the privilege of working alongside my fellow council members and city staff to address the challenges and opportunities facing our growing community,” Corrieri said in a statement. “There is still important work to be done, and I am committed to continuing to be a strong voice for all Ames residents.”
During her council tenure, Corrieri has advocated for affordable housing initiatives, sustainable human services, and enhancements to the parks and recreation system. In a fourth term, Corrieri said she wants to address “downtown development with new housing opportunities, aging city facilities and infrastructure needs, and improving collaboration with community stakeholders to attract economic development investment while enhancing the quality of life.”
Corrieri was first elected to her seat in 2013. She was reelected in 2017 and 2021. She is the chief operating officer of development at Mainstream Living, a nonprofit organization that provides services to people with disabilities and behavioral health needs.
What’s Next: Those interested in running for city council or mayor can file to do so beginning Aug. 25. The 2025 election, which will also include four school board director seats, is Nov. 4.
