Volunteers unloaded hundreds of boxes with books that span all genres — from science fiction to reference books and gardening to children’s literature on Wednesday. It’s time for the Ames Public Library’s book sale.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Iowa State University has offered numerous educational opportunities for community members since 2008, and with numerous volunteer instructors and support from Iowa State, the participant feedback the program has received has been quite positive.

The Ames School Board will have two familiar faces and two new faces after this year’s election. Three ran for three at-large seats — Kelly Winfrey, Art Baumgartner and Jennifer Tipton — while Aaron Rodriguez ran to fill an at-large vacancy. All were uncontested.

Ames approves new fire station; mayor, city council, hospital trustees reelected

Ames voters approved spending $10.5 million to relocate Fire Station No. 2 from the heart of Campustown to State Avenue. There were 5,881 votes on the question in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial election results from the Iowa Secretary of State. The bond garnered 5,099 yes votes — 86.7%.

Ames City Council defers action on requiring pet licenses

Ames residents may soon need to get licenses for their pets. The city council heard from several residents in opposition to the ordinance and then decided to take up the issue again next year while instructing city staff to launch a public information campaign to explain the program.

Ames music students make it to All-State

Every year, thousands of students spend months learning, memorizing and practicing music — all for the chance to perform at the Iowa All-State Music Festival. Those in band, choir, and orchestra had the chance to showcase their talents during auditions on Oct. 25.
The Ames Police Department arrested Tyler Lee Zeuthen, 24, last week and charged him with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death, both of which are felonies.

City gets high marks on annual satisfaction survey

Ames residents continue to be highly satisfied with city services, with 98% rating services as either good or very good in 2025, according to an April survey of 1,350 residents and 1,000 Iowa State University students.
