A new leader will help guide local news’ future in Ames.
The Ames Voice Board of Directors selected Brynn Sweere as the organization’s first executive director on Monday.
Sweere was chosen for her nonprofit background as well as her work in fundraising, community engagement and organizational leadership.
“Brynn brings the experience, energy and community focus we need as we continue building a sustainable local news organization,” the board said in a statement. “Her background in fundraising and nonprofit leadership will help Ames Voice grow while staying true to its mission of serving the community.”
Sweere will lead the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit organization as it works to expand local reporting and strengthen connections across Ames with local businesses, civic groups and residents.
She will help establish the systems needed to support the organization’s future growth such as donor and membership programs and advertising partnerships, as well as strengthen fundraising efforts and expand community partnerships. Other duties include grant writing, fundraising and community outreach and helping recruit and supporting the reporters and other staff members as Ames Voice grows.
Previously, Sweere was a fundraiser for the Iowa division of the American Heart Association. She helped build relationships with donors and supporters while raising funds for programs and services. She also has experience working with nonprofit organizations and helping community-focused groups achieve their goals.
The board stated her ability to connect with people and build relationships made her a standout candidate during the search process.
The Ames Voice, which launched last year, was created to provide reliable local news for the Ames community. It is working to develop new sources of support and create long-term financial stability. Board members said hiring an executive director is an important step in building a strong and lasting organization.
