ISU project reimagines Lake Laverne

Iowa State University’s Lake Laverne, which sits on the south side of campus along Lincoln Way, is currently blocked off by metal fences surrounding the area and is void of water. This summer, the lake is under construction for a two-phase renovation. Construction started in late May, with completion set for fall or winter of 2027. The project’s main goal is to improve the depth and volume of the lake to better keep the water healthy.

Across five commencement ceremonies held May 14 to 16, a total of 4,121 undergraduate students, 528 master’s students, 128 Ph.D. candidates and 155 veterinary medicine candidates received degrees from Iowa State University. A total of 891 first generation students were conferred degrees.

Joel Sartore: Documenting 18,000 species and counting for Photo Ark preservation

As a boy, Joel Sartore read about passenger pigeons, a once common North American bird that likely numbered in the billions, and had a difficult time understanding why people allowed the pigeon to be hunted to the point of extinction. More than five decades later, Sartore, a photographer for National Geographic and founder of the Photo Ark, is even farther from any understanding. Satore will speak about his career and the Photo Ark work, which aims to photograph all species living in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Sun Room in the Memorial Union.

Regents discuss tuition hike, land sale and campus improvements

The Iowa Board of Regents approved the sale of 17 acres of Iowa State University land to Hunziker Development Group and 574 Investments to develop workforce housing in the Ames community. The land — with the sale price of $550,000 — is located at 1915 Scholl Road.

‘Democracy does not survive on silence’

The Ames community braved winter’s bitter wind on Saturday and gathered in front of the Campanile on the Iowa State University campus to march and advocate for freedom of speech, protection of due process and voting rights.
