The Iowa Board of Regents approved a tuition increase and pay raises at its meeting earlier this month.
Meeting at the University of Iowa from June 10 to 12, the Regents voted to raise tuition for the three state universities, which includes Iowa State University, by 3%.
Regents approve ISU tuition increase
Tuition costs will rise by 3% at Iowa State beginning in the 2025-26 school year following the approval from the Board of Regents.
In-state undergraduate: $9,530 (+$278)
Out-of-state undergraduate: $28,578 (+$1,232)
In-state graduate: $11,838 (+$346)
Out-of-state graduate: $29,976 (+$874)
Iowa State will also have a $26 increase in mandatory fees, a 1.7% increase for undergraduates ($1,561) and a 1.8% for graduate students ($1,501). The fees include costs for technology, health, student activities, student services, facilities, career services and recreation.
In 2024, the Board of Regents also approved a 3% tuition cost increase at Iowa State.
Vet Med: Tuition at the College of Veterinary Medicine will increase by 3.5% for in-state students and 3% for out-of-state students.

Search for Wintersteen’s replacement begins
In May, President Wendy Wintersteen announced plans to retire. She was named the university’s first female president in 2017 and the second ISU alum to hold the position.
The Board of Regents announced the presidential search committee to find Wintersteen’s replacement at the June meeting.
Committee members are:

- Greta Rouse, President Pro Tem of the Regents
- Robert Cramer, member of the Regents
- Kurt Tjaden, member of the Regents

- Muhammad Azhan, President, ISU Graduate and Professional Student Senate
- Jennifer Schroeder, President-Elect, ISU Professional and Scientific Council
- Tim Day, ISU biomedical sciences professor
- Patrick Schnable, ISU agronomy professor
- Cara Heiden, ISU alumnus
- Roger Underwood, ISU alumnus
The Regents also announced they have hired AGB Search, a Washington D.C.-based higher education search firm, to assist in the search process.
Wintersteen receives pay raise
A pay raise of $25,000 for Wintersteen was also approved by the board.
Wintersteen’s base salary will be $735,000 for the upcoming school year, effective July 1. The raise is a 3.5% increase from her 2024 pay. It comes after the announcement of her plans to retire in 2026.
Barbara Wilson, president of the University of Iowa, will receive a $65,000 raise, bringing her base salary to $825,000. Mark Nook, president of the University of Northern Iowa, will receive a $12,890 raise, bringing his base salary to $410,000.
