Ames residents don’t need to worry about their water as concerns arise in central Iowa

As concerns of water quality in central Iowa rise, Ames residents do not need to worry about the safety of their great-tasting water supply. High levels of nitrate were found in the water supply that comes from the Des Moines and Racoon rivers this summer. Ames was not included in communities affected by the ban, but questions regarding water safety in the city have been raised.

ISU research project in plant genome editing leads to a promising new startup

The new Ames start-up Hermes Biomaterials is offering a product with the potential to make new waves in the world of editing plant genetics. It sprouted from a research project at Iowa State University looking into ways to improve the delivery of genetic code into plant cells and is now offering products that promise to significantly boost the delivery and efficiency of genetic information into plants.

Iowa is known to have mood swings when it comes to weather, but this summer it seems to have gotten angrier than normal. In Ames, there has been heavy rain, storms and severe weather warnings for most of the month. The city has received more than 11 inches of rain just in July — a deviation of over 7 inches from average rainfall this time of year.

JAX campus gets new life as hub for area nonprofits

The three Ames nonprofits Friendship Ark, the Arc of Story County and Overflow, are coming together to take over the JAX Outdoor Gear campus, 4723 Lincoln Way. The sporting goods store will close later this summer after 70 years. The nonprofits make the move to expand services and space, which will operate as administrative offices, meeting space, recreational facilities and a new thrift store.
