Retired Army 1st Lt. Judy Trumpy, dietician and former manager for Iowa State University dining services, will speak at a Veterans Day program on Tuesday.
After graduating from Iowa State in food and nutrition-dietetics, Trumpy served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 as a registered dietician with the Army Medical Specialist Corps.
The Ames Patriotic Council’s Veterans Day program will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ames City Auditorium.
During her military service as a second lieutenant, Trumpy held an internship at Lettermen General Hospital in San Francisco. She was promoted to first lieutenant and served as chief of diet therapy at the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo.
After her military career, she managed dining services at the ISU residence halls.
From 1974 to 1991, Trumpy was a dietary consultant to residents in eight nursing care facilities in central Iowa where she helped provide appropriate menus for residents of varying capabilities and participated in residents’ plan of care.
In 1991, Trumpy became an assistant manager with ISU Dining and expanded some of her duties at the Thielen Student Health Center counseling students on healthy diets.
She retired in 2010.
Trumpy and her husband, Frank, live in Ames. They have two adult children and three grandchildren. She is active in the American Legion Post 37 and the Ames Patriotic Council and volunteers for Mary Greeley Hospital Hospice program and is an active member of St. Cecilia Parish.
All veterans from all services and all periods will be honored at the event.
Also on the program: The event will include an introduction from Ames Patriotic Council President Tim Gartin and welcomes from Ames Mayor John Haila and Post Commander Cliff Barker of American Legion Post 37. American Legion Auxiliary Juniors Avary Jones and Neveah Johnson will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. There will also be performances by Jim DeHoet, the Heart of Iowa Senior Band and the Ames High School Concert Chorale.
