The Ames community saw the northern lights’ hues of bright green, pink and red in the night skies on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A geomagnetic storm in the solar system allowed central Iowa — plus two dozen other states — to see the colorful display. A storm happens when charged particles from the sun’s atmosphere interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, according to an article from NPR.
