After months of delays and construction challenges, Steven L. Schainker Plaza is expected to open to the public on Monday. Most construction work is finished, but a few repairs and state approval remain before the public can use the new downtown attraction just east of Ames City Hall. However, city staff are still optimistic that the north and east portions of the project, including the building and splash pad area, will be ready for visitors.

It’s officially the holiday season — the temperature has dropped, there’s snow on the ground and decorations are up. There are markets, celebrations, festive gatherings, holiday music and more in and around Ames that are sure to get you in good spirits ahead of Christmas Day.
A team of 1,931 volunteers spent time last week stenciling, gutting and carving 1,400 pumpkins in preparation for the Spirits in the Gardens event held at Reiman Gardens during the weekend.
