Mary Salawuh-Warren (1941–2011), educator and advocate
Mary Salawuh-Warren came to Ames in 1972 with her husband, Dr. Dennis Warren, after he accepted a teaching position at Iowa State University. Dr. Warren was an anthropologist who specialized in advocating for his wife’s community members and fellow citizens in Ghana. Salawuh-Warren was a business owner who ran Mary’s Infant Daycare. At any given time, she cared for up to six infants 18 months or younger. Together, the Warrens were dedicated in educating students and the Ames community about the people of Ghana, their culture and their struggles. They often travelled back to Ghana with Dr. Warren’s students.
