Nonprofits that help youth and those dealing with homelessness were among the groups that reported to the Story County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
Youth & Shelter Services: Andrew Allen, president and CEO of Youth & Shelter Services, and Cassandra Cruz, a YSS social worker, said the organization, which provides care and help for youth and those struggling with substance abuse, has helped more than 13,000 individuals in the past year.
Allen said the children they meet who are homeless often say they are “camping.” Allen shared stories of how he helped these teens get treatment and begin their sobriety, while providing them with a safe place.
“We are serving more youth from Story County than we had previously,” Allen said.
The organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary in November with a gala event to celebrate the connections made and the importance of youth health and safety.
Home Allies: Home Allies President Lauris Olson said the nonprofit organization, which provides housing for the homeless and creates affordable living situations, has served 15 families with five families currently residing within its units.
“We are pleased that we have been able to serve more than just single individuals,” Olson said. “There is a great need out there for single individuals, but there is also a great need for family housing and transition that offers them the opportunities to also try to look for a job and gain some security.”
The group has also implemented a scoring system that helps decide who is assigned housing and provides points for households with children.
Emergency Management: Story County’s Emergency Management Agency reported it has completed its severe weather training for the summer. Melissa Spencer, the agency’s coordinator, said the organization plans to create a disaster phone bank process with Central Iowa RSVP, a group for senior volunteers.
“If folks want to report damages or they need assistance with disaster clean up, we are going to have a hotline available for that,” Spencer said.
From June 26 to 29, the Story County Amateur Radio Club, in cooperation with emergency services, is hosting a multi-county field day at Ledges State Park south of Boone.
