ISU’s presidential search narrows to 8 candidates

A search committee narrowed a list of 78 candidates hoping to be Iowa State University’s next president down to eight in a closed meeting on Monday. The committee will conduct virtual interviews with the eight semifinalists, whose names have not been made public, between Oct. 20 and Oct. 22.
This former daycare facility at 2715 Dayton Ave. is the future site of Ames Animal Shelter. Organizers are aiming for work on the structure to begin next spring.

Campaign nears fundraising goal for new Ames animal shelter

The fundraising campaign for a new Ames Animal Shelter is $300,000 from meeting its $7.5 million goal. The city of Ames has purchased a building and some land for the construction of a new animal shelter at 2715 Dayton Ave. The shelter, however, needed $7.5 million to support development of the new facility, including a complete renovation of the building, which was previously a daycare facility.
As falls among seniors rise, Story County Falls Prevention Coalition is a local group that is trying to reduce the risk of falls. A lecture this Thursday at Iowa State University will also inform on measures and exercises to help reduce the risk.

Ames electric rates may be going up 1.5% soon

The Ames City Council voted on Tuesday to have the city attorney draft language to change the city code to enable Ames Electric Services to raise electricity rates by 1.5% for all customers starting after the summer season this year, then bring the matter to the council for future consideration.
The Knoll, the president’s residence, was found to have “challenges typical of older homes” according to the Board of Regents' report.

Aging Knoll residence shows issues in regent analysis

The Iowa State University president’s home was found to have several issues — most associated with aging homes — by a facility analysis completed by the Iowa Board of Regents. Sean Reeder, senior vice president for operations and finance, told the Regents about deficiencies at the president’s home, known as the Knoll, at its meeting last Thursday.

School board hears about pilot programs, updates and plans

The Ames Community School District will pilot a new elementary literacy program through 95 Percent Group, the board decided Monday in a 4 to 1 vote. The curriculum, 95 Phonics Core Program, includes classroom kits, student workbooks and activities.
