As falls among seniors rise, Story County Falls Prevention Coalition is a local group that is trying to reduce the risk of falls. A lecture this Thursday at Iowa State University will also inform on measures and exercises to help reduce the risk.

ACTORS opens season with laughs, family ties

Ames Community Theater is starting off its season celebrating family with its production of You Can't Take It with You, which begins Thursday and continues for two weekends. The play is about the clash that comes when the quirky Sycamore family meets the straight-laced Kirby family after their children fall in love.

Lecture: Author traces the rise of food titans

As an adult, Frerick spent five years researching the nation’s food industry, culminating in his book, “Barons: Money, Power and the Corruption of America's Food Industry,” which traces the rise of seven titans of the food industry and the cost of sustaining the system. Frerick will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ames Public Library.

Ames celebrates Ukrainian Independence Day

Ames’ Ukrainian community celebrated their home country’s 34th year of independence from the Soviet Union on Sunday at Inis Grove Park. The city is home to a robust Ukrainian population. Through Lutheran Services in Iowa and its community partners like the Ames Interfaith Refugee Alliance, dozens of Ukrainian refugees and their families have settled here in recent years.

MU rental art now for sale

After 50 years of service, the Memorial Union’s art rental program is coming to an end at Iowa State University. The art once part of the program's collection would be available for purchase by the public at a sale on Wednesday.

New Mexican restaurant to fill vacancy in west Ames

A sign with margaritas and a palm tree has been erected in front of Dakota Crossing, signaling a new tenant for the space suddenly vacated by Mullet’s in April. Juan Dominguez, who owns other Mexican restaurants in Iowa, hopes to open Patio Bar & Grill before the end of the summer.
Kids (and grown-ups) eagerly wait for a refreshing splash to beat the Fourth of July heat.

Red, white and blue flooded the streets for a festive Fourth of July weekend, with fireworks lighting up the night Thursday and the parade bringing crowds out on Friday.
