If you live in a house or housing structure of four or fewer units and receive Ames utilities, you will be receiving a recycling cart similar to one of these mid-year in 2026 as part of the city’s new recycling program.

Ames moves forward on curbside recycling

Ames is wasting no time in preparing for a curbside recycling program. Every household would get a 96-gallon recycling cart picked up every other week at a likely monthly cost between $6 and $8 per household, city staff recommended to the Ames City Council on Tuesday.
The Ames City Council looked at several options to make sure the Municipal Power Plant has plenty of natural gas through the first six months of 2026 when it met on Tuesday.

Council selects flexible natural gas purchase

Ames needs a new deal for natural gas to keep its municipal power plant running and burning garbage. With the current contract ending on Dec. 31, city staff recommended a flexible buying plan to the Ames City Council that will cost up to $7 million for the first half of 2026.
The Ames Department of Motorized Vehicles will close its current location at 3708 Lincoln Way, on Thursday and move to a new location in the Iowa Department of Transportation complex, 203 S. Grand Ave. It'll open at 10 a.m. Monday.

Drivers license center closes Thursday and Friday for move to DOT complex

The Ames drivers license station is moving from the west side to a more central location. Currently located in the Lincoln Way Corners development the center will be closed on Thursday and Friday and reopen at 10 a.m. Monday at its new location at the Iowa Department of Transportation complex, 203 S. Grand Ave.

BioMADE breaks ground on new plant

Book sale so everyone can start a library

Volunteers unloaded hundreds of boxes with books that span all genres — from science fiction to reference books and gardening to children’s literature on Wednesday. It’s time for the Ames Public Library’s book sale.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Iowa State University has offered numerous educational opportunities for community members since 2008, and with numerous volunteer instructors and support from Iowa State, the participant feedback the program has received has been quite positive.
