DES MOINES — Behind a dominant multi-phase performance and a standout special teams display from former Iowa State Cyclone Andrew Mevis, the Green Bay Blizzard (13-2) routed the Iowa Barnstormers (1-13) 65-21 on Saturday at the Casey’s Center.
Green Bay asserted control early, finishing the first quarter with a 21-7 lead. The Blizzard offense was remarkably efficient, outgaining Iowa 262 to 193 in total yards while maintaining a staggering 36:31 of possession time.
The story of the night was the performance of Mevis. Mevis accounted for 17 total points, finishing a perfect 8-for-8 on extra points and drilling an 18-yard field goal. His impact was most felt through the Indoor Football League’s “deuce” rule, where he successfully kicked the ball through the uprights on three separate kickoffs to earn six additional points.
The Green Bay offense featured a balanced attack led by quarterbacks Liam Thompson and Cole Stenstrom. Thompson completed 7 of 10 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Demilon Brown paced the ground game with two rushing touchdowns on 11 carries.
Iowa struggled to maintain momentum despite quarterback Aaron Aiken accounting for all three of the Barnstormers’ touchdowns. Aiken threw for 143 yards and two scores, both to receiver Jalal Dean, and added a rushing touchdown in the first half. However, the Iowa offense was hampered by two lost fumbles and a stagnant rushing attack that was held to just 50 yards.
Defensively, the Blizzard were led by Andre White Jr., who recorded nine total tackles and the game’s only sack. Green Bay’s defense shut out the Barnstormers in the final quarter, capping the victory with an 18-yard Mevis field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run in the closing minute.
