Two and a half minutes into No. 2 seed Iowa State’s First Round game against No. 15 seed Tennessee State, the 17,192 in attendance fell quiet as consensus All-American Joshua Jefferson landed awkwardly.
Jefferson was helped off the floor and returned to the bench in a boot and on crutches.
“He has a sprained left ankle. We had an X-ray and it was negative,” head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “We’ll continue to reevaluate over the next day or two and see where things are when we get to Sunday.”
In his absence, Iowa State (28-7, 12-6 Big 12) showed no drop-off, overwhelming Tennessee State (23-10, 15-5 Ohio Valley) in a 108-74 win Friday at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The 108 points marked a program record for an NCAA Tournament game.
After Dante Harris trimmed the Cyclones’ lead to 9-7 with 15:18 left in the first half, Iowa State responded with a 23-0 run over the next five and a half minutes. Milan Momcilovic and Nate Heise each scored eight points during the stretch, while Batemon added five and Toure chipped in two of his career-high 25 points. Toure also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Heise finished with 22 points off the bench, helping Cyclones outscore the Tigers 50-6 in non-starter production.
A Dominkyas Pleta layup with 3:30 remaining in the first half extended the lead to 46-19, and Iowa State took a 55-29 advantage into the break.
At the 7:30 mark of the second half, Kavien Jones was ejected after a review determined his foul on Pleta was a flagrant two.
The Cyclones maintained control throughout the second half. With 4:14 remaining, Momcilovic pushed Iowa State past the 100-point mark and stretched the lead to 38, its largest of the game. Eric Mulder’s dunk with 78 seconds left capped the scoring for Iowa State, while Damon Howard Jr.’s 3-pointer accounted for Tennessee State’s final points.
Iowa State shot 38-of-72 from the field and 11-of-24 from 3-point range, while going 21-of-27 at the free-throw line. Tennessee State finished 28-of-65 from the field, 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and 13-of-19 at the line. Aaron Nkrumah led the Tigers with 21 points.
Next up: No. 2 seed Iowa State will face No. 7 seed Kentucky. The Cyclones are 0-3 all-time against the Wildcats, with previous meetings coming in 1964, 1992 and 2012.
