A busy trail that many use to get to Iowa State University is closed indefinitely after floodwaters ripped away large sections of the path.
The trail connects Emma McCarthy Lee Park and Oakland Street. City officials shut it down after heavy rain from July 1 to 3 caused Clear Creek to overflow its banks. The rushing water eroded the streambank and washed out parts of the trail, leaving it unsafe to use.
City leaders say the closure will be felt by a lot of people. Joshua Thompson, the parks and facilities superintendent, said the trail serves both as a place to relax and as a way for students to get to class.
“We know this trail is used by many residents and visitors for recreation and as a commuting route to and from Iowa State University, but it is not safe for use in its current condition,” Thompson said.
No word on repairs
City staff will now work with other city departments to check how bad the damage is. Thompson said the team will decide what to do next once that review is finished.
The city has not set a date for reopening the trail. Officials also do not yet know whether the damaged sections can be fixed or if they will need to be rebuilt.
For now, the city is asking everyone to stay off the trail. Signs and fencing mark the closed area, and officials want people to respect those barriers for their own safety.
Anyone who normally uses the trail should plan to take another route until the city gives further notice. Residents with questions can contact Ames Parks and Recreation at 515-239-5350.
