Junior shortstop Mya Geffre provided a spark for the Ames offense, but the Little Cyclones struggled to contain sixth-ranked Southeast Polk in an 11-1 defeat Tuesday night.
The Little Cyclones (23-16) managed five hits against the Rams’ pitching staff. It was a standout performance from Geffre, who finished 2-for-3 with a triple and scored the team’s lone run. Other offensive contributors included Charlotte Woodley and Hailey Craig, who both went 1-for-2, and eighth-grader Chloe Thompson, who added a single.
Defensive struggles hampered the Little Cyclones throughout the five-inning contest. Ames committed four errors, which contributed to three unearned runs for Southeast Polk. Kate Nigh, Meredith Frandsen and Thompson were all charged with errors.
Sophomore pitcher Kiley Sodahl went the distance in the circle, surrendering 11 runs on nine hits while walking six. Sodahl faced 23 batters and recorded one strikeout in the loss.
Despite the setback against the high-ranking Rams (22-15), Ames remains seven games over .500.
