Ames dropped a 1-0 decision to Ankeny Centennial on Monday night in a matchup of two of the state’s top girls soccer teams.
Centennial entered the match with a 9-1-1 record while Ames came in at 7-1-2.
The first half featured a defensive battle, with both teams limiting scoring chances and keeping most shots from a distance. Neither side was able to create many close opportunities near the net.
Centennial broke through with 9 minutes remaining in the first half when Kayle Pezzetti scored after a shot deflected off an Ames defender slipped past the goalkeeper, giving the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.
The second half mirrored the first. Both teams generated chances but were unable to finish. Ames pressed for an equalizer late, but Centennial held on to secure the shutout.
