Ames secured two Blue Standards on its home track during the Jim Duea Relays on Tuesday, qualifying in the girls 4×800-meter relay and 4×200-meter relay.
Achieving Blue Standards, a set of qualifying marks established at the start of the season, guarantees athletes a spot at the Drake Relays.
The two Ames teams will compete at the relays, scheduled for April 23 to 25, for a chance to contend for a Drake victory lap and championship flag.
4×800 relay team: Leah Kincaid, Brenna Van Cleave, Naya Nakama, Emma Stanley
4×200 relay team: Angelica Attinger, Natalya Deardorff, Edyn Cowles, Sophia Hatcher
In total, 16 varsity teams competed at the the Jim Duea Relays for top finishes — and a chance to qualify for the Drake Relays.
Early in the meet, lightning and a torrential downpour — accompanied by hail — forced a postponement, leaving uncertainty about whether competition would resume. After about 45 minutes, events continued as scheduled.
Waukee Northwest dominated the field, winning the team title with 161.5 points. West Des Moines Valley finished second with 69 points, while Ames placed fifth with 62.
